Nowadays, modern data centers consist rows and rows of server & network racks. Within the racks, there are high powered servers which generate lots of heat. The number one problem in a data center is HEAT nowadays. Thus, monitoring and managing the temperature inside the rack to the manufacturer’s recommended operating environment is a big challenge. Every electronic equipment will operate best as long as the temperature does not exceed manufacturer’s specified operating environment. We all know that. However, the current method of doing show is cumbersome & messy. It has lots of constraints. The whole problem points to the basis that it is a ‘wired’ solution. Wired technology is becoming a ‘sunset’ technology. The data center can do with less or no wires. The current data center is already congested with wires running below the raised floors, along cable trays and/or conduits. It is very messy. It is difficult to manage. It has no investment protection. Thus, it is a big problem for wired technology.
The need to manage the temperature inside the rack is crucial. The new high powered servers have in-built sensors for temperature control. When the temperature inside the rack rises & this is detected by the in-built sensor, the processing speed of the high powered server will reduce so that less heat will be generated. This means that the through put of the high powered server will be reduced. The end result felt by all users will be slow response. We have often experienced this phenomena but unable to pin point it. The processing speed will go back to normal when the temperature revert to the normal operating range. If no action is taken and the temperature continues to rise, then when it comes to the point when the in-built sensor detects that it will cause harm to the electronic components, the serve will either hang or shuts down abruptly without any warning. This is a worst case scenario. Data can be loss. Mission critical service is definite disrupted. The corporation suffers financial loss, image loss and consequential loss. This is a huge impact.
This is where our wireless EMS solution will address the major risk that data centers now face. Our wireless EMS will provide continuous monitoring inside the rack all the time. It makes use of wireless sensors that can be placed inside the server rack at the appropriate location. This is recommended to be 2/3 up of the 42U rack. All the wireless sensors are linked to a centralized Gateway. It will report on the temperature to the main Gateway every 10 minutes under normal operating conditions. Each sensor can be set with a threshold that will trigger an abnormal condition so that an alert can be sent to the Gateway immediately without waiting for the regular broadcast. This way, the temperature violation is detected immediately. When our application receives such a message, it will send a sms and email to all the respective personnel set up in the database. Multiple sms and emails sent are to ensure that the problem is attended immediately and no one will able to overlook. All setting of threshold & database needs are friendly through the use of parameter settings.
